1. Brand Philosophy / ブランド理念

MOMOYO STOBY FASHION embraces the philosophy,“Once Vintage, Now the Spotlight.”

We upcycle vintage Japanese textiles—especially tenugui and cotton fabrics from the Shōwa era (1926–1989)—into sustainable, contemporary garments that honor Japan’s textile heritage.

Each vintage textile carries a story—the memories, artistry, and spirit of its time.By reviving these forgotten materials, we create one-of-a-kind garments that let you wear a story of the past.

素陶美 MOMOYO STOBY FASHION は、「どんなに古い布も主役になれる」という理念のもと、昭和時代（1926〜1989）の手ぬぐいや木綿など、日本各地の古布をアップサイクルし、現代の暮らしに寄り添う衣服を制作しています。

古布一枚一枚には、その時代を生きた人々の物語や文化が刻まれています。その“物語”に新たな命を吹き込み、「世界に一つの物語を纏う服」を創り続けています。

2. How the Brand Began / ブランド設立のきっかけ

For about twenty years, I worked as a private school teacher.Supporting children’s growth brought me joy and purpose.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when in-person classes became difficult, I returned to sewing—something I had always enjoyed privately.Through this, I felt a strong desire to share the beauty of Japanese vintage textiles with the world.

That led to the birth of MOMOYO STOBY FASHION.While continuing my teaching career, I now upcycle traditional Japanese fabrics and share their stories beyond Japan.

私は約20年間、私塾で教師として子どもたちと向き合ってきました。コロナ禍で対面授業が難しくなった時期に、自分のためだけに続けていた衣服づくりを通して、“日本の古布の魅力をもっと多くの人に知ってもらいたい”という思いが芽生えました。

その思いから「素陶美 MOMOYO STOBY FASHION」を立ち上げました。現在も教師として働きながら、古布の魅力を世界へ発信しています。

3. Commitment to Materials / 素材へのこだわり

Japanese antique and vintage fabrics are known for their exceptional quality, maintaining their beauty even over decades.Tenugui and cotton fabrics are soft, breathable, and gain richness with use.

Many Shōwa-era textiles feature unique typography—store names, addresses, phone numbers—dyed in nostalgic, playful styles.Breathing new life into these fabrics is the foundation of my creative practice.

日本のアンティークやヴィンテージの布は素材の質が非常に高く、長い年月を経てもその魅力を失いません。特に手ぬぐいなどの綿素材はしなやかで通気性がよく、使い込むほど風合いが増します。

昭和時代の布には屋号や住所、電話番号が独特の字体で染められ、懐かしさと遊び心が宿っています。これらの布に新たな命を吹き込むことが、私の創作の原点です。

4. Philosophy of Upcycling / アップサイクルの哲学

Even faded or stained fabrics can be renewed with natural dyes like persimmon tannin, gaining new character and life.Shōwa-era motifs connect the past and present in a single textile.

The garments born from this process are a fusion of timeless materials and contemporary sensibility—truly one of a kind.I believe fashion has the power to connect hearts across backgrounds and cultures.

色あせや汚れのある古布も、柿渋などの天然染料で染め直すことで新たな風合いと命を帯びます。昭和特有のレトロな字体や絵柄は、過去と現在をつなぐ物語そのものです。

こうして生まれた衣服は、“時を超えた素材 × 現代の感性” が融合した唯一無二の存在。ファッションには異なる背景を持つ人々の心をつなぐ力があると信じています。

5. Design Process / デザインプロセス

A single vintage textile is often not enough to create a garment,so I combine several fabrics to form a complete piece.

When fabrics meet, memories from different eras and places intertwine.I cherish the moment when a new harmony and story are born.

ヴィンテージの手ぬぐいや古布は一枚だけでは足りないことが多く、複数の布を組み合わせて一つの作品を完成させます。

布と布が出会い、異なる時代や土地の記憶が一つに調和する瞬間。その“新しい物語が生まれる瞬間”を大切にしています。

6. Connection to Japanese Culture / 日本文化とのつながり

Each piece embodies the Japanese spirit of cherishing what already exists—“Once Vintage. Now Spotlight.”

Vintage textiles contain the lives and stories of previous generations.Reviving them in a modern form reflects Japan’s cultural spirit of renewal.

作品には「どんなに古い布も主役になれる」という、日本的な“ものを大切にする心”が込められています。古布には当時の暮らしや思いが息づいており、それを現代に蘇らせることは、日本文化の“再生”の精神そのものです。

7. Memorable Encounters / 印象に残る出会い

When I began sharing my work overseas, a renowned actress from Singapore purchased my pieces.Later, she visited me during a family trip to Japan, and we became dear friends beyond borders.

Hearing directly how international customers feel when wearing my clothesis the greatest encouragement for my creativity.

海外展開を始めた頃、シンガポールの著名な女優の方が作品を購入してくださいました。その後ご家族で日本を訪れた際に私のもとへ会いに来てくださり、今では国境を越えて信頼し合える友人となりました。

海外のお客様が作品をどう感じ、どんな思いで着てくださるのか――その声を直接聞けることが何よりの励みです。

8. Challenges & Discoveries in New York / ニューヨークでの挑戦

Participating in Brooklyn Fashion Week and showcasing my work in New York were major challenges—yet they brought countless discoveries and moving experiences.

The Japanese typography printed on Shōwa-era fabrics was seen as “art” abroad,resonating far more deeply than I expected.

Cultural differences brought new perspectives and rich conversations,rather than barriers.

ブルックリン・ファッションウィークやNYでの展示は大きな挑戦であり、同時に多くの発見もありました。

昭和の布に染められた日本語の屋号や字体は、海外では“アート”として受け止められ、想像以上に強い共感を得ました。

文化の違いは不安ではなく、新たな視点と豊かな対話を生み出すものでした。

9. Looking Ahead / 今後の展望

I will continue sharing the message:“Once Vintage, Now the Spotlight.”

Shōwa-era textiles carry warmth and stories that resonate across cultures.Through each one-of-a-kind piece, I hope to bring their beauty to more people around the world.

これからも「どんなに古い布も主役になれる」このメッセージを世界へ届けていきたいと考えています。

昭和の古布が持つ温かさや物語は、国や文化を超えて人々の心に響く力があります。一点一点を通して、その魅力をより多くの人に届けたいと思っています。
