1. About your brand “ILODORICAL Kingdom” — what kind of world and concept do you value?

I’m creating a story called ILODORICAL Kingdom — a land where color and sound overflow, and where the most important thing is the heart.In this kingdom, the heart equals ART, and the country has many systems that allow everyone to enjoy art freely.

Lodori Aico is a certified artist from this kingdom — a kind of official envoy who creates works such as paintings and paper dresses (called bom bom dresses) to connect people’s hearts through art.

あなたのブランド「ILODORICAL Kingdom」について、どんな世界観やコンセプトを大切にしていますか？

私は「イロドリカル王国」という物語を作っています。その国は色と音が溢れ、心を一番大切にする王国です。心＝ARTと考えられ、誰もがアートを楽しめるよう、さまざまな制度が作られています。

Lodori aicoは、その王国から来た認定アーティスト。絵や紙のドレス（bom bom dress）などのアート作品を通して、人々の心を繋ぐ外交官のような存在です。

2. What inspired you to start creating dresses made of paper?

It all began when I discovered large flowers made of paper.I decided to try making them myself and ordered various types of paper.Among them, I found a special flower-wrapping paper and thought — “Could this be wearable?”That was the beginning.

I never studied fashion design, nor was I skilled at sewing — I couldn’t even use a sewing machine.So at first, I made dresses simply using scissors and a stapler.

紙で作るドレスという独自の表現方法に至ったきっかけを教えてください。

紙で作る大きなお花を知ったことがきっかけでした。見よう見まねで自分でも作ってみようと、いろんな紙を取り寄せていた時に、今使っているお花のラッピングペーパーに出会い、「これ、着れるのでは？」と思ったのが始まりです。

服飾学校を出たわけでもなく、裁縫も苦手で、ミシンも使えなかったので、最初はハサミとホチキスで作っていました。

3. The theme of your exhibition in New York, “Neo Japonism” — what message do you want to express?

To be honest, I wasn’t very interested in Japanese culture before; I was more drawn to the overseas world.But through creating bom bom dresses, I came to appreciate the beauty of wa — the Japanese spirit.

Unlike traditional kimono, these paper dresses are light, easy to wear, and three-dimensional like Western gowns.They blend the two worlds — one sleeve may be kimono-style, the other like a dress — expressing the image of modern Japan.

It’s about preserving the old while embracing the new, and letting them coexist in harmony.That’s the message behind my work — and the essence of my Neo Japonism.

今回のニューヨークでの展示「Neo Japonism」では、どんなテーマやメッセージを伝えたいですか？

正直、昔は日本文化にあまり興味がなく、海外への憧れが強いタイプでした。でも、紙のドレス（bom bom dress）を作る中で、和の素晴らしさに気づきました。

昔ながらの着物とは違い、もっと軽くて簡単に着られ、ドレスのように立体的。帯を巻き、片袖は振袖、もう片方はドレスのようなデザインで、「今の日本」を表現しています。

古き良きものを残し、新しい良いものを取り入れる。その融合こそが私の目指す「Neo Japonism」です。

4. How did your collaboration with TenNYO come about?

TenNYO is a Japanese designer living in Canada who deeply loves traditional Japanese culture and aims to share it with the world.She even published a book called TAMAGO, which introduces Japanese culture to global audiences in a fun way.

She was the one who taught me the beauty of Japanese culture.Two years ago, thanks to her invitation, we held a show in Canada.After that, we said, “Next time, let’s do it in New York!” — and that dream has now come true.

一緒に展示されるTenNYOさんとのコラボレーションについて教えてください。

TenNYOさんは、カナダに住む日本人デザイナーで、日本文化を愛し、海外に伝え残していきたいという想いを持つ方です。日本文化を楽しく紹介する本『TAMAGO』も出版されています。

彼女が私に日本文化の素晴らしさを教えてくれた人。2年前にカナダで一緒にショーを開催し、「次はNYで！」という約束が今回実現しました。

私は思い切った行動が苦手なタイプなので、彼女の誘いがなければこの展示は叶わなかったと思います。心から感謝しています。

5. Any memorable episodes or challenges during the creative process?

While experimenting with different shapes of paper dresses, I created the kimono dress.When wearing it — something powerful awakens.

That deep energy arises from within, and everyone who wears it feels it too.I realized this must be Japan’s DNA.

That connection inspired the Hime Project — photographing about 200 women in Japan wearing the kimono dress and walking through their lands.Those portraits will be exhibited this time, each carrying its own story.

制作過程で特に印象に残っているエピソードや挑戦はありますか？

さまざまな形の紙ドレスを試行錯誤する中で、「着物ドレス」が生まれました。帯を巻き、振袖を纏うと、奥からエネルギーが湧くような不思議な感覚があり、どの人も同じ体験をしました。

「これが日本のDNAなんだ」と感じました。その感覚をもっと感じたくて、日本各地で女性たちに着てもらい撮影する「姫プロジェクト」を約200人行いました。その写真たちを今回展示しています。

6. How do you reinterpret “Japanese culture” and “the beauty of Wa” in a modern way?

Wa (harmony) is beautiful, but sometimes it feels like we must suppress ourselves to create it.I want to change that.

True harmony, I believe, is when each person expresses their individuality fully — and together, that forms a new kind of Wa.I also want to reveal the imperfect, hidden sides of Japanese culture that were once kept secret.That’s the modern beauty I wish to show.

「日本文化」や「和の美」をどのように現代的に再解釈していますか？

「和」は素晴らしいけれど、ときに「自分を合わせなければならない」と感じる部分もあります。その解釈を変えたい。

1人1人が自由に個性を発揮した結果として生まれる「和」。それが現代の和の美だと思います。また、完璧でない「裏」の文化も見せていきたい。それも現代的な魅力のひとつです。

7. What do you focus on when presenting your work abroad, and how does New York inspire you?

New York has always been my dream city — full of color, sound, and freedom.To present my work here feels unreal, like a dream come true.

In the past, I might have thought, “Someone like me could never…”But now, I want to express myself as I am and simply experience it.I’m excited to see what kind of art I’ll create next.

海外で作品を発表する上で意識していることや、ニューヨークという街からのインスピレーションは？

NYは昔から憧れの街。自由で、色と音に溢れた場所です。そんな場所で作品を発表できるなんて夢のようです。

以前の私は「私なんて」と躊躇していたけれど、今はありのままを出して、感じてみたい。その体験が次の作品にどう繋がるのか楽しみです。

8. What is the unique charm and potential of paper as a medium?

It’s infinite. Lightweight, flexible, and easy to reshape — even during a show.You can transform it with a stapler or safety pin, and it’s easy to carry.The making process itself becomes a kind of performance.

紙という素材ならではの魅力や可能性をどう感じていますか？

無限大です。軽くて扱いやすく、重ねても重くならない。ホチキスや安全ピンでその場で形を変えられるのも魅力。作る過程そのものを「見せるショー」にもできる。重いものや時間がかかることが苦手な私にはぴったりな素材です。

9. What are your dreams and future goals?

It’s hard to explain yet, but I want to make bom bom dress its own genre — a new culture.People may see it as fashion, but to me, it’s ART.

More than perfection, I value challenge.Not “Beautiful,” but “Joyful.”I want people to feel that spirit through my work —and maybe discover a new joy in their own lives.
